Goemann, Henry L. -- H. L. Goemann Dies -- Photo Caption: Henry L. Goemann, above it, six leader and organizer of the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, died today at General hospital. He had been afflicted with a heart condition for some time. Death claims civic leader -- H. L. Goemann, 77, organizer of Chamber of Commerce, succumbs at hospital. The city of Mansfield lost one of its greatest friends with the death early this morning of Henry Louis Goemann, 77, organizer of the present Chamber of Commerce and a figure of national importance. His death came unexpectedly at 5:00 a.m. today at General Hospital where he had been taken Tuesday afternoon for rest and care. Although he had suffered from a heart condition for three years, he had been about his daily business until last Saturday. Although he had been a resident of Mansfield for less than a quarter of a century, few men had given more to the business development of the city since the turn of the century. Mr. Goemann was born in Cincinnati June 5, 1863 and it was in that city that he had started his chamber of commerce work. He joined when he was 21 years old, had been a member of some City Commerce Association continuously since. He is believed to be one of the oldest members in the state in point of service. In 1916 he reorganized a Mansfield Chamber of Commerce and served as president for four years. For the past 10 years he had been counselor from the local chamber to the United States Chamber of Commerce and had gone to every annual meeting in Washington. In May, 1934, when A. D. Caddell resigned as secretary of the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Goemann took over those duties for five months, serving without remuneration. He had served on a number of important chamber committees, including national legislation, grain and transportation. In 1933, as local representative of the bondholders' committee of the empire sheet and tin plate Co., be worked untiringly to re- organized that industry in order to keep in Mansfield. In 1917, while president of the Chamber of Commerce he was named to the City Planning Commission where he served for a number of years. Through at his adult years he had been an ardent member of the Republican Party and at one time was candidate for mayor. Working independently of party leaders, he sometimes carried his views to the public by means of newspaper advertising. Last year, Mr. Goemann was signally honored by the National Grain Association when members gave a dinner in his honor in Minneapolis which was attended by grain men from all over the nation. He was honored as the oldest living president. In his private life he had many close friends. He was associated with Grace Episcopal Church which he served as vestryman for a number of years. Fraternally he was a member of all Masonic bodies including the 32nd degree, and of Westbrook Country club. Mr. Goemann is survived by his wife, Edith, a daughter, Mrs. Clark Husted of Toledo , and two grandsons, Henry Goemann and Clark Husted, Jr. Episcopal funeral services will be read at Grace Church at 8:30a.m. Monday by the Rev. Glenn Lewis. The body will be taken to Cincinnati where Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Spring Grove it cemetery and interment will be made there. Submitted by

Goetz, Henry Adam -- 72, of 3680 W. Fourth St., Ontario, died October 12, 1983 in Mansfield General Hospital. Funeral services were October 12 in the Wappner-Ontario Funeral Home with Mr. Goetz's nephew, Rev. James Goetz of Gibson, Minnesota officiating. Burial was in the Ontario Church Cemetery. Henry was born in Richardton, North Dakota on March 5, 1911, and had lived in this area most of his life. He was retired from White-Westinghouse, and was a member of the Ontario United Methodist Church. He had served in the U. S. Air Force in the Philippines during WW II. He is survived by his wife, Rhea B. (nee Downs) Goetz, sons, Daniel and Laura (nee Schultz) of Edmond, Oklahoma, and John of Vadalia, Ohio; daughters Becky and Jerry McCord of Ontario, Peggy Goetz (Martin) and Frank Price of Charleston, SC, and Connie Goetz of the home; grand children, Jaime and Adam Goetz , Jeff and Kenny McCord, and Justin Martin., four brothers, Joe and Rose (nee Bittenbinder) Goetz, and Arthur Goetz of Mansfield, John and Frances (nee Elkins) Goetz of St. Paul, MN, and Raymond and Jan (nee Knight) Goetz of Middletown, CA; sisters, Anna and Tony Banyai of Rio Linda, CA, Catherine and Joe Klupp, Rose and Joe Klupp, Cecelia and Tom Klupp, all of Mansfield, Ohio, and Louise and John Rieth of Lodi, CA. Goldsmith, Jacob -- Jacob Goldsmith, 89, a well-known resident of Galion, for many years, died at his home in that city Thursday night. He was born in Madison township, Richland county, and spent the early years of his life near this city. Surviving are six children. [Mansfield News: 21 July 1917, Vol. 33, No. 116]

Goldsmith, Judson -- Judson Goldsmith, former Bellville resident died Sunday June 12, 1922 in the Galion hospital. Cancer of the stomach was the cause of the fatality. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from the home of the brother of the deceased. Interment in the Galion cemetery. Judson Goldsmith was nearly fifty eight years of age at the time of his death. Due to his failing health, Mr. Goldsmith retired from active business some time ago. About seven years ago, Mr. Goldsmith resided in Bellville; where he was well and favorably known. He is survived by three sons, Guy, Herbert and Forrest, one grandchild, and his former wife, Mrs. Bertie Goldsmith. [Bellville Star: 15 June 1922]

Goldsmith, Usher -- Monday. Usher Goldsmith, an old citizen of this city, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. M.R. Seigle (may read W.R.), No. 36 South Main Street, at 7:30 o'clock last evening. Mr. Goldsmith was 83 years, 3 months and 2 days old at the time of his death. Golladay, Henry -- H.G. Palmer and wife, Sidney Palmer, H.W. Palmer and J.M. Palmer attended the funeral of their uncle, Henry Golliday, a well known farmer, who died Tuesday at his home near Olivesburg. The interment took place at Franklin churchyard Thursday morning. Golladay, Henry -- Epworth. The funeral of Henry Golladay occurred here Thursday of last week. The services were conducted by the Rev. E.T. Hagerman, presiding elder of Sandusky district, and singing by the Hughes' male quartette, all being nephews of Mrs. Golladay. Quite a number of the Palmer relatives of Mansfield were in attendance. He was a member of the church here for a number of years; then went to Ashland for a few years, then to Olivesburg, where he died after an illness of more than a year. Presiding Elder Persons spoke feelingly last Sunday of the vacant seat which he always occupied at quarterly meetings at his old home church. Mrs. James Mason and Miss Myra Golladay came from Fostoria to attend the funeral of their father. Mrs. Mason will return to her home Saturday and Miss Golladay will stay with friends for some time. Golladay, Martha Palmer -- Epworth. Martha Palmer Golladay died at the home of her brother, E.G. Palmer, in Mansfield, Monday, Aug. 29, and was buried here beside her husband Wednesday. She had gone to Mansfield for a visit and died very suddenly. Dr. Gould conducted the services, our pastor being absent. Mesdames Flo and Dora Clingan and Edith Oswalt and Miss ?eda Stober sang two selections. Her nephews, Sidney and Leslie Palmer and Melvin, Fred, Frank and George Hughes, were pall bearers. Two beautiful floral offerings were made by Miss Minnie Ferree, in behalf of the Epworth League. Since her husband's death, a year ago, she has at times been a great sufferer, being almost helpless with rheumatism, yet no impatient word ever escaped her. Gongwer, Maria -- Mrs. Maria Gongwer, aged 84, in failing health for some time, was taken ill after dinner Sunday and passed away at two o'clock Monday morning. She resided on West Fourth Street. Mrs. Gongwer was one of the oldest residents of this county. She came from Pennsylvania when a mere child and spent the rest of her life here with the exception of about ten years during the last twelve years of her life. Thirteen children were born to Mrs. Gongwer, only one of whom is not living. The children are: Mrs. L.C. Mengert, Mrs. J.C. Crider, Mrs. W.B. Hoover, Mrs. F.B. Hershey, who lives in Taylorville, IL; Mrs. F.E. Anderson, living in Circleville, O.; Mrs. Springer, of Dalton, Ga., Miss Hattie Gongwer, Louis Gongwer of Philadelphia; Samuel Gongwer and Frank Gongwer of Sunsmuir, Cal.; E.M. Gongwer, of Seattle, Wash.; Harry Gongwer, of St. Louis, Mo. She leaves twenty-nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gongwer's husband, Joseph Gongwer, passed away about 1879 or 1880. She will rest beside her husband in the Mifflin Cemetery. Mrs. Gongwer was one of the best known women in the county. Gongwer, Merle F. -- Merle F. Gongwer died at the rooms of his mother, Mrs. J. Irene Gongwer, in the King block at 10:45 o'clock Tuesday evening. The deceased was about 25 years of age and has been ill several months. He was in the employ of H.E. Cave of this city for a time and afterward went to Lima (OH). When taken sick he was the owner of an umbrella store in the Arcade at Cincinnati. He was brought home five weeks ago and has been gradually getting worse ever since. Funeral Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. Dr. Fairfield officiating. Funeral services for the relatives and immediate friends and interment private. Good, Joseph -- Lucas, March 25. Joseph Good, an employee of the Richland Stone Co. at this point, was instantly killed in a horrible manner at about 12 o'clock today. Mr. Good was on his knees watching the section of the engine when the steel hosting rope caught his clothing in such a manner as to draw him into the immense drum or spool, breaking his neck instantly. The remains were at once taken care of and prepared for burial. The time of the funeral has not been definitely decided. The deceased was forty-five years old and leaves a wife and five children. Good, Samuel -- Lucas. Samuel Good, one of the aged and honorable men of Lucas, was taken with heart trouble on Thursday evening January 2nd., and since has been very low. Mr. Good is near his 84th. birthday. Later -- Samuel Good died on Monday evening and was buried on Wednesday at 10:30 o'clock. Services by Rev. Goodbread, James N. -- James N. Goodbread, one of the most highly respected citizens of Nevada, died at his home in that village, Wednesday evening, at 9 o'clock, from diabetes, after an illness of 2½ years. James N. Goodbread was born in Richland County, this state, March 21, 1851, being aged 54 years, 1 month and 26 days. He was the only son of William F. & Susanna (Wolfe) Goodbread and came to Wyandot County with them in 1853. At the age of seen years he came to Nevada, where he attended the public schools until the age of seventeen, when he was employed in the county treasurer's office, as assistant to his father. In 1871 Mr. Goodbread entered the drug store of Goodbread & Jones, at Nevada, and remained as clerk until 1879. When he purchased Mr. Jones' interest and became a partner in the firm. After the death of his father, Mr. Goodbread succeeded him to the entire business, which he conducted to the time of his death with signal [sic.] ability. Mr. Goodbread was engaged in all the public enterprises of his home village and established the telephone lines to Little York and Wyandot. It was also through him that a telephone system was placed in operation at Nevada, he having charge of the plaint. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Knights of Pythias and Knights of Honor lodges, and also an influential worker in the Lutheran church. Mr. Goodbread was married October 24, 1872 to Miss Mary Leith, of Nevada, who with one son, Harry L., as traveling manager of the Bell telephone company, survives him. Thus has Nevada lost one of its most public spirited citizens. Goodhart, Jacob -- Bellville. Jacob Goodhart died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joh Parsons, on Main Street, on Friday evening. When his daughter went to call him to breakfast she found him unconscious and evidently suffering from a stroke of paralysis. He remained in this condition until 5:45 p.m., when he passed peacefully away. Mr. Goodhart was in his 78th. year and had been feeble for some time. He leaves a daughter and two sons. His son John, who lives in Missouri, arrived in time to attend the funeral, which took place at 2 p.m. Sunday. Services and interment at the Salem Lutheran Church. Discourse by Rev. J.N. Goodman, Lillie -- DIED -- At the residence of her mother, Mrs. Mary Goodman, on Tuesday morning, June 25, Miss Lillie Goodman, aged 20 years, 2 months and 25 days. Prospects were bright for the other world. She died happy saying she was going home to Jesus. We have no doubt but Lillie is angles [sic.] where she will wait for friends to follow. The funeral took place at the M.E. Church on Thursday, June 27, conducted by Rev. Long. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community. Goodwin, Fenton -- Fenton Goodwin, of whose critical condition at his boarding place, 87 East Fourth Street, an account was given in Wednesday's News, died Wednesday evening about 9 o'clock. A number of his relatives, including his wife and child, his father and mother, sisters, brother and aunts were at his bedside. This morning the body was taken to his late home at Shelby, where the funeral service took place this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Goodwin, Homer C. -- Darlington. Death has again visited our community and has taken from our midst Homer C. Goodwin. The deceased was a man widely known, having followed for several years the profession of school teaching, being a Justice of the Peace and assessor of Perry Township for a number of years, and lastly locating as a merchant in our village, from which he was taken away, Jan. 24, 1895, aged 40 years, 3 months and 12 days. Drs. Pennell and Eastman held a post mortem examination and declared his death the result of a fall received some four weeks before. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Blackford, of the Universalist church, of which the deceased was a member. He had been enjoying good health for some time past, ate hearty Saturday and as he got away from the supper table fell dead without a struggle. Gordon, P.A. -- Sunday. A telegram was received last night by George S. Harris announcing the death at Milan, O., of Dr. P.A. Gordon. The cause of death was heart failure. The deceased was quite well known here, Mrs. Gordon being a sister of E. McFall. He was also surgeon of the 35th. Regiment, recruited in this locality. Gore, Mary (Rimmy) -- Died, on the 23d. day of May, 1874, in the city of Mansfield, Ohio, Mrs. Mary Gore, who was born in Bucks County, Pa., on the 12th. day of March, 1783. She was the daughter of Adam Rimmy and Mary Hicks, who moved to Baltimore County, Md., in 1788. Her father was a soldier of the Revolution. Her husband, John Gore, died in Baltimore County, Md., in 1821. Her Birthright was in the Society of Friends, and as a woman of piety and Christian virtue, her equals were few. She lived as she died, with her whole trust in the kind care of the "Good Father". Her life was a long one -- many, many years she dwelt among us, but no day found her other than the kindest and most gentle of mothers. Safe in the hearts of all who were intimate with her will her memory ever be, for not one act or deed in the nearly a century she lived, was ever committed by her that would blot or stain her purity. Seldom has old age gone down to the grave with as much good left behind; the world is better for her having lived in it. Gorman, May Bee -- Lucas. May Bee was the name of a dear little treasure which has been adorning the home of Mr. & Mrs. C.H. Gorman for the last 18 months, but the death angel came to that home and claimed that dear little girl. Gortner, Ruie -- Ruie Gortner, daughter of Henry M. and Kate Gortner, was born September 10th., 1863, and passed away from earth to heaven, June 12th., 1872. Ruie was a faithful Sabbath School scholar, and through the teaching of Christian parents at home, and the instruction of the Sabbath school, she had learned to love that Redeemer, who was so previous to her, through all her sickness. When asked if she loved Jesus, she replied "Yes, I love Jesus, and he loves me." She lived long enough to learn to make sacrifices for others, and never seemed happier than doing good to others. Ruie will be missed and mourned by many; but by none so much as by her parents. Gortner, Susan -- Susan Gortner died January 5th, 1896, aged 84 years, 10 months 1 day. She was born in Cumberland Co., Pa., and emigrated to Wayne Co., O.,in an early day. And from there to Richland Co., O., about 38 years ago. For 12 years she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Barga's, where she after a prolonged siege of dropsy died. For about 30 years she was a most consistent and faithful member of the Myers Lutheran Church. Her last hours were full of peace and resignation, she spent all her private hours in reading and studying her German Bible. A large retinue of friends attended her funeral and her pastor Rev. Goss, Elmer -- Monday. Elmer Goss, about 30 years of age, a switchman in the employ of the Big Four, fell between the cars at noon last Friday near the Wayne Street crossing at Dayton and was instantly killed. He leaves a wife and two children. He was a bright child and his untimely death will be greatly mourned by all who knew him. He was 5 years old and had been ill for about a year with a complication of diseases, beginning with pneumonia and ending in tuberculoses. Grafmiller, Flora A.—Mansfield. Mrs. Flora A. Grafmiller, 76, of 411 Scholl Rd. died Friday morning in Mansfield Memorial Homes following a one-month illness. Born Nov. 21, 1902, in Crawford County, she lived in Mansfield the past six years and was the widow of George Grafmiller. She was a 52-year employee of the Cecil Candy Factory of Michigan. Mrs. Grafmiller was a member of the Methodist Church and the Rebecca Lodge of Warren, Mich. Survivors include her stepfather, Henry A. Sutter of Crestline and seven nieces and nephews including Mrs. James Gadd with whom Mrs. Grafmiller lived. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a. m. at the Jack Sprott Funeral Home in Warren, Mich. Burial will be in Rose Land Park Cemetery in Berkley, Mich. Graham, A.A. -- A.A. Graham, author of the History of Richland County, who died in Albuquerque, New Mexico some time ago was buried at Columbus, yesterday. Wednesday's State Journal contained the following with regard to the funeral: The funeral of A.A. Graham, late Secretary of the Ohio State Archæalogical and Historical Society, occurred yesterday at 7 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, of which church Mr. Graham was a member. Rev. Mr. Miline, the pastor, presided and addresses were made by Rev. William E. Moore, who is Vice-President of the Society, and Rev. Mr. French, who officiated at the marriage of Mr. Graham in Mansfield, O., some 20 years ago. A handsome floral emblem, the tribute of the Society, rested upon the casket. The burial was private, the remains being temporarily placed in the vault at Green Lawn Cemetery. The pall bearers were Messrs. H.A. Thompson of Dayton, G.F. Bareis of Canal Winchester, E.F. Wood and E.O. Randall of this city, officers of the Society and Messrs. Corner and Covert, members of the benefit society of which Mr. Graham was a member. Graham, Henry S. -- The funeral of H.S. Graham, one of the pioneers of Troy Township, took place from his late residence near Lexington Sunday. It is said that the attendance was the largest of any funeral ever held in the township. About forty people were present from Mansfield, an representatives from other parts of the county were quite as numerous. The services were conducted by the Rev. Fulton. Graham, John -- Lexington, June 16 -- Mr. John Graham, one of our oldest citizens, died a few weeks ago at the residence of his son, H.S. Graham. Uncle John was one of the pioneers of Richland County, coming here at an early date from Washington County, Pennsylvania. Davis, conducting the obsequies. Mr. G. formerly resided at Lexington. He went to Tennessee five years ago, where he resided until his return to this place last week in very feeble health. Graham, L.B. -- L.B. Graham was killed and C.L. Stodert was seriously injured at the new open hearth mill of the Mansfield Sheet and Tin Plate company last Friday afternoon when a piece of structural steel fell upon them while they were engaged in elevating it with others of the construction gang. Graham was struck on the head by the steel and instantly killed. Stodert received a more glancing blow on the had, and sustained a severe scalp wound. He was taken to the General Hospital for treatment. Stodert's home is at Warren, and he is about 40 years of age. Graham is married, and rooms with his wife on North Diamond street, Mansfield. Mrs. Granger was well known to the older residents of this city, being the widow of Judge Granger, who, in the early 50's, was a prominent politician of the county. About 30 years ago she moved with her husband to Chicago, where they remained for several years until Mr. G. died. Grant, Elizabeth Carrothers -- Mrs. Elizabeth Carrothers Grant, an aged and highly respected lady of this city, who has been a resident of Mansfield for 83 years, died Friday morning at 2 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.R. Smith, 52 East Fourth Street. Mrs. Grant has been in feeble health for some time past and last Tuesday she sustained a fall, which hastened the end. Mrs. Grant was born Jan. 24, 1809, in Belmont County. She came to Mansfield in 1815 with her parents and has lived here ever since. She was married to Edwin Grant, who died in 1845 at Mt. Carmel, Ill. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. R.R. Smith, with whom she has resided. She has a brother Samuel Carrothers, of this city. Early in life Mrs. Grant united with the Presbyterian church and during all the years of her long life she remained true to her early faith and was always a consistent Christian. Hers was a prolonged life well spent. She was the oldest resident of Mansfield in point of years passed here. A short service was held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at her late home, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Dr. D.D. Meese, after which a service was held at the Presbyterian church. The honorary pall bearers were Levi Zimmerman, Abner Wright, H.R. Smith, Henry C. Hedges, James Carrothers and N.S. reed and the acting pall bearers were Hugh Young, A.B. Cornell, A.H. Condict, J.H. Grassel, died in Mansfield General Hospital Thursday evening after a brief illness. 11/11/1975 Mrs. Grassel was born in Akron , Dec. 17, 1905 , and lived here most of her life. She worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for many years, retiring in 1967. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Surviving besides her husband is one daughter, Mrs. Maxine Dodd of Mansfield . Services will be conducted in St. Peter’s Catholic Church Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery . Graser, Walter H. -- MANSFIELD – Walter H. Graser, 85, of 315 Palmer St., Wooster, brother of Mansfield Lee Graser, died Tuesday at the Wayne County Care Center. Mr. Graser was born May 1 902, in Warsaw, Ohio. He had been employed by the Wooster Metal Brick and Tile. Surviving are three brothers; five sons; a daughter; 25 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie in September 1984. Mr. Grassick was born Jan. 1, 1882 in Newcastle, England, coming here when a child. He was a member of the Master Plumbers Assn. Surviving are his wife, Mable E. Marks Grassick; three sons, Robert of California, William of Minneapolis, Minn., and Paul of Mansfield; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Buckingham of Mansfield and Mrs. Mary Goon of Los Angeles, California, and five grandchildren. She was born Aug. 22, 1910, in Mansfield, and had lived in the area all her life. She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church. She is survived by three sons, Robert W. Grassick, David E. Grassick, and Kenneth O. Grassick, all of Mansfield; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one niece, Carolyn Gross; and two nephews, Jack Chapman of Mansfield, and Richard Chapman of California. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Nora Bowden Chapman; one brother, Harold Chapman, and one sister, Naomi Thompson. Grauer, Henry -- Henry Grauer, aged 76 years, died Sunday at the Sandusky Soldiers' home after a short illness. The remains were brought to Butler Tuesday, and funeral services were conducted by Rev. O. Spreng at the Evangelical church. Interment was made in the Four Corners Cemetery. The deceased was never married. He served his country valiently during the war of the rebellion and was honorably discharged at the expiration of his enlistment. Grauer, Mary A. (Secrist) -- Mrs. Mary A. Grauer, widow of Philip Grauer, of 304 Park Avenue East, died Friday night at 10:35 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.M. Reed, on Marion Avenue, at the age of 58 years, after having been ill for the past year and a half with a complication of diseases. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Reed, of this city, and Miss Della Grauer, of Cleveland, two sons, Stanley, of this city, and William, who is in the west, also one brother, William Secrist, of Hastings, and one sister, Mrs. V.A. McBride, of Butler. She was a member of the Evangelical Association church. Funeral from the Reed home, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by the Rev. E.D. Paullin. Grauer, Philip -- Philip Grauer, a citizen well known here and in the northern part of Richland County, dropped dead Thursday morning. Mr. Grauer, who with his family resided at 295 Park Avenue East, was in the Park grocery on the east side of Central Park about 11 o'clock and apparently in as good health as usual. He was talking with A.D. Rinehart, of the firm, about the purchase of some commodity. The grocery man turned his head a moment to look for something on a shelf behind the counter and hearing a slight noise looked around and discovered that Mr. Grauer had fallen to the floor. He ran around the counter and raised the fallen man's head, but Mr. Grauer was unconscious and never uttered a word after he fell. Dr. Mecklem was called and pronounced him dead. It was stated that he had been suffering from diabetes, but it is suspected that he was also a victim of heart trouble and that the latter caused the sudden death. It is stated by those who knew Mr. Grauer that he had been ill for several years, but his trouble was not thought sufficiently troublesome to lead one to think he was in danger of sudden death. For some time Mr. Grauer had a meat market on the east side of Central Park in a room adjacent to the one in which he died. He was born in Butler Twp. and formerly lived there for a number of years, after which he removed to Mansfield. It was feared to break the sad news to Mrs. Grauer for the reason that she also is in poor health and, therefore, somebody telephoned her at first that her husband was very sick and would be taken to the Emergency hospital for a short time for treatment. Beelman's ambulance was then called and the body removed to the undertaking rooms to be prepared for burial. After the body was taken to the undertaking rooms, friends went to the house to break the sad news to Mrs. Grauer. Deceased leaves a widow and four children. Gray, A. Wiley -- Center Hall (Monroe Twp.). We are called upon to announce the death of A. Wiley Gray, who passed peacefully away at five minutes after one o'clock on the morning of the 5th. inst., after an illness of twenty-eight days with typhoid fever. His age was 19 years, 6 months and 11 days. Funeral services were held at the house, conducted by the Rev. J.R. Sykes, after which the remains were taken to the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Lucas, and there deposited in the grave beside his mother, who was laid there but eleven weeks before. The funeral was well attended by friends and neighbors, but the relatives were conspicuous by their absence. Miss Mattie Gray, who is still suffering from the effects of the fever, is slowly recovering. There are circumstances connected with this case that to most people would appear somewhat peculiar, needing as she did the utmost care and attention since Nov. 18th. She has been greatly neglected by the women of the neighborhood, being compelled to submit to the care of men, who were strangers to her. One thing that deserves special mention is the manner in which the teacher of Center Hall school arranged the scholars by the roadside as the funeral of Wiley passed, it being a beautiful tribute of respect to an honored schoolmate. -- [Richland Shield & Banner: 15 February 1890, Vol. LXXII, No. 39]

Gray, Jennie -- Mrs. Gray, 57, Dies at Home-- Native of Richland County To Be Buried Monday. SHILOH -- Mrs. Jennie Gray, 57, dies at her home near Plymouth today after a long illness. She was a native of Richland county, having been born in Franklin township Oct. 10, 1882. Surviving are her husband, J. Woods Gray: a daughter, Mrs. Foster Keinath, Plymouth, and two brothers, L. K. Shariff of Franklin township and E. D. Shariff of Shelby. The body was removed to the McQuate funeral home where friends may call and where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Gray, Mrs. A.M. -- Lucas. Mrs. A.M. Gray died Nov. 15th. and was buried on Saturday, Nov. 17th. Mrs. Gray had been ill with typhoid fever for about five weeks. Mrs. Gray was taken sick sixteen weeks ago with the same disease and at present is just able to be about. The death of Mrs. Gray leaves a husband, three sons and one daughter. Mr. Gray extends his thanks to his neighbors and friends for their kindness during his bereavement. Funeral services by Rev. Greely, Benjamin F. -- Benjamin F. Greely was born in Palermo, Maine, March 5th., 1810; was stricken down with paralysis on Friday morning and after lingering two days passed peacefully away Sabbath morning, May 16th., 1886, at his home in Bellville, Ohio. Father Greely has been in feeble health for several years and in the providence of God was called upon to pass through seasons of severe affliction and trial, but out of them all the Lord delivered him. Greely, Frank -- Last Saturday evening the citizens of this place were startled by the sad news of the death of Frank Greely. He had been at work cutting wood till about two o'clock in the afternoon and was apparently as well as usual. He ate a hearty supper at about half past five after which he was playing with his little nephew. At about half past six he laid down on a lounge saying that he was tired. His sister, who was in the room soon heard him make an unusual noise and went to his side, and seeing that something was wrong with him went immediately after Dr. McMahon who arrived just in time to see him breathe his last. Drs. Austin, Sampsell, Lydy and Kelly were summoned and every means used to revive him but without avail. On Sunday afternoon a postmortem examination was held by doctors McMahon, Austin, Sampsell, Lydy, Kelly and Lewis with the following result. Atrophy and dilation of the right ventricle of the heart, congestion and dilation of the stomach to three times its normal capacity. Death resulted from excessive pressure of the enormously distended stomach on the thoracic organs causing a failure of action of the weakened heart. The deceased was born in Rockland, Maine and die at the age of 38 years. He was the son of B.F. Greely and his death leaves but two children out of a family of nine. He was a member of the M.E. church for a number of years and at home he was affectionate and kind, both as a son and brother. Green, Eliza J.D. -- Died, at her residence, in Crawford Co. (OH), Sept. 3d., 1876, Eliza J.D. Green, wife of Walter Green, aged 57 years, 8 months and 8 days. Mrs. Green was born in Richland County, O., December 25th., 1818, and was married to the husband she has left behind, November 1st., 1837. She united with the M.E. Church in the winter of '54 under the ministrations of Rev. S. Seymour. Some time afterward she transferred her membership to the Lutheran Church in Plymouth, and a few years ago, removing to her late home, too far from Plymouth to attend services there, she united with the Lutheran Church at Oakland, of which she was a member until her death. Living for some years in our midst she is remembered by her friends and neighbors as a devoted Christian woman. Coming into service in middle life, she seemed to be trying to atone for early neglect by assiduous service during the time that remained. Much of the after part of her life was one of pain and sickness, so that her attendance upon the services of God's house was very infrequent. During her last illness which had continued for several years, though it was apparent life must soon close for her, and the pain of parting was long before her; she yet enjoyed the consolations of religion, and was able to bear with patience the blow of the hand of God. Confidence in the love of God as her Father sustained her heart. Owing to the absence of her pastor, the services were conducted by Rev. Stough of Plymouth, after which her remains were carried to the graveyard followed by a large concourse of friends. Green, Lizzie -- One by one our old friends are passing away. Saturday night at 11 o'clock the announcement by telegraph was made that Mrs. Lizzie Green, of Painesville, had died at 7:30 p.m., after a short illness, the character of which is not made known. This brings to recollection one of the brightest, most distinguished amiable, lovely and beloved young women of Mansfield, when it was a village, more than half a century ago. She, with her father and mother, came here from Pittsburg, Pa., in the summer of 1845, and they made this their home, when they were joined shortly after by her brother, Joseph Richard, deceased, lately of this city. She at once took position in society and was its queen, acknowledged so by all. She loved Mansfield and her associates, but loved another more and was married after a few years to H.P. Green, an estimable gentleman, since and lately deceased. From here she, with her husband, went to Baltimore, Md., where they remained but a short time, and returned to her first love, now a city, and here they remained a few years, her husband and father engaging in the drug business in what is known as the Colby & Geddes block on Main Street. From here they removed to Newark, thence back to Mansfield, and from here to Painesville, where her husband was elected county recorder and died while in office. They reared a large and loving family of five girls and five boys, all of whom survive her, excepting three. One of her daughters, Mrs. Mary McAbee, whose husband died in California, lived with her in her late home and is well known in this city, having lately visited here. Many tears of sorrow will be mingled with those of her bereaved family in this their great bereavement. Greenawalt, Raymond Henry -- BLOOMINGGROVE TWP - Raymond Henry, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Greenawalt, was born February 13, 1927, and passed away at the home on April 5. Greer, Alex. -- Alex. Greer, Esq., another of our old pioneers, died last Saturday morning of general debility, aged 85 years, 2 months and 11 days. The funeral took place Monday afternoon and the interment was made in the Independence Cemetery. Rev. Henry Keller conducted the services. In the death of Mr. Greer our community loses a good man and a fine man. He was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace in this township for three successive terms and acquitted himself with honor and the good will of the people each time. Greer, Hattie -- Independence. Miss Hattie Greer, who has been ill of consumption for a long time, died about 11 o'clock Wednesday night of last week, aged 19 years, 10 months and 5 days, and her funeral took place from the M.P. Church, of which she was a member at one o'clock p.m. Saturday, conducted by Rev. W.O. Scott. The remains were interred in the Independence Cemetery. Miss Greer was a very bright and promising young lady who had a host of warm friends and to see this beautiful flower plucked just as it was blooming has cast a gloom over the entire community. The funeral was one of the largest and most sympathetic we have ever attended. Greer, Henry -- Henry Greer died Monday at 2:30 a.m., after a general decline covering several months from a disease incident to old age. The funeral took place Tuesday at 2 p.m., from his late residence on Main Street, Butler, and services were conducted by Rev. O. Spreng assisted by Rev. H.C. Berger at the M.E. church. Interment was made in the Butler Cemetery. Deceased was born in Wayne County, Ohio, Nov. 5, 1828 and died aged 77 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was united in marriage with Rachel Waters, July 8, 1860, who with one son, M.R. Greer, survives, together with three grandsons, two brothers and two sisters, all of whom reside in the vicinity of Butler. At the age of 18 he was apprenticed to the blacksmith trade, and opened a shop in Pinhook. While there it was his business to shoe the stage horses on the line between Wooster and Mansfield. About 46 years ago he came to butler and opened a shop, which he conducted up to a few months ago, when failing health caused a retirement from the active duties of life. He has always been numbered with Butler's best citizens, and his many traits of character will live after him. Greer, James A. -- James A. Greer died Monday evening about 6 o'clock after a lingering illness with chronic consumption, in the 78th. year of his age. The funeral took place Thursday at 10 a.m. from his late home near Hemlock Falls and interment was made at St. Johns with Rev. Ochletree officiating. Deceased leaves three sons and three daughters. John F. Greer, Mrs. W.W. Ames and Mrs. John Cates, Jr., of the vicinity of Butler, Wm. Greer, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Laurel Greer, of Akron and Mrs. Thos. Gleason, of Collingwood. Four brothers and two sisters also survive as follows: Henry Greer, of Butler, John Greer, Mrs. Mary Sheehy and Miss Lydia Greer of the same vicinity and Wm. Greer, of Mansfield. Deceased was at one time Trustee of Worthington township and was well and favorably known. His wife died about two years ago, and since then he has been living with A.L. Oswalt on his own farm, near Hemlock Falls. Mr. Greer was born in Ashland County, Ohio, in 1826, and was for many years identified with the blacksmith trade in Butler, Pinhook and Newville. Greer, Margaret -- The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Musgrove took place Friday at 11 a.m. from the M.P. church, conducted by Rev. W.E. Harrison. The remains were interred in the Butler Cemetery. Margaret Greer was born June 9, 1816, in Allegheny County, Pa., and came to Ohio, at an early date. She was married to Calvin Musgrove, to which union was born one daughter, Mrs. John Aungst, now deceased. She was an aunt to Henry, John and Wm. Greer, Mary -- Butler. John Greer received a telegram Monday announcing the death of his granddaughter, Miss Mary Greer, at Akron (OH). Deceased was the third daughter of W.A. Greer and wife. Greer, Mary -- Returning from his work in the fields, Tuesday afternoon, John F. Greer, a farmer, living two miles south of Newville, was shocked to find his wife, Mary Greer, sitting a rocking chair in the kitchen, dead. She was 58 years of age. When Mr. Greer left his wife she was apparently in her usual health. Coroner Bushnell, who was called, said he thought the woman had been dead at least two hours before the husband found her. Apoplexy was given as the cause of death. The children are all married and live away from home. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at St. John's church in Mifflin township. Greer, Mertie (Remy) -- Mrs. Mack Greer, after an illness of 12 days, died Wednesday evening about 9:30, aged about 30 years. She leaves a kind husband and three children, two boys and one girl, and many other relatives to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother, and kind neighbor. Greer, Mertie (Remy) -- Butler. The funeral of Mrs. M.R. Greer, nee Mertie Remy, who died at her home in Bellville, Wednesday evening, Aug. 1, was conducted at the Butler M.E. church, Friday, at 2:45 by Rev. A.H. Smith assisted by Revs. Spreng and Andrews. Interment was made in the Butler Cemetery. Deceased was born in Worthington Twp., Sept. 16, 1879, and died Aug. 1, 1906, at Bellville, where she and her family moved about a year ago, aged 26 years, 10 months and 16 days. She leaves a sorrowing husband and three small children, and a mother to mourn her untimely death. She was the only daughter of Peter and Louisa Remy. The father died some years ago at Mansfield. Greer, Mrs. John -- Independence. Mrs. John Greer, who has been ill of dropsy for sometime, died Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Greer, P. Bert -- BUTLER -- P. Bert Greer, who worked with the B. & O. section men, was killed instantly Thursday at 11:20 a.m., near the home of Bruce Friday, south of town. He lost his balance and was struck by the handle bar and thrown in front of the hand-car, which run over him and crushed his skull. The car was thrown from the track. Bert never knew what hurt him. The section men were on their way to dinner when the accident Occurred. Mr. Greer was aged 18 years, 5 months and 26 days. He is survived by his father, Mack R. Greer, one sister, Mrs. R. Helen Miller, of near Perrysville; one brother, H. Carl Greer, and two grandmothers, Mrs. Rachel Greer and Mrs. Eliza Remy Bemiller, all of Butler. Greer, Samuel B. -- Samuel B. Greer, of Independence, was buried from his late home near Independence, on the 31st. ult. Rev. Anderson conducted the funeral services, assisted by Revs. Shisler and King. Mr. Greer was born in that vicinity Nov. 22, 1842. He married Miss Shrader July 16, 1872. He was an industrious man, working as a bridge carpenter on the B.&O. R.R. until two years ago, when he strained his left arm. It became palsied. Dropsy became seated in his system and terminated his life on the 29th. ult. in the 42nd. year of his age. Gregg, Pheba (Jackson) -- Mrs. Pheba Gregg, relict of William Gregg, who departed this life about twenty-six years ago, died Monday at 2 o'clock after a lingering illness covering a period of several years. Death was resultant of a complication of heart and dropsical trouble, from the effects of which she has been confined to her bed since October. The funeral took place Wednesday at 2 o'clock from her late residence on Ogle street, and services were held at the M.E. church. Owing to the absence of Rev. F.D. Stevick, pastor of deceased, Rev. A.A. Hundley conducted the obsequies, and interment was made in Beulah cemetery. Pheba Jackson was born March 6, 1828 in Knox County, but spent the early part of her life near Chesterville, Morrow County. She was married to William A. Gregg, Dec. 23, 1847. This union was blest with eight children, seven of whom survive. Her father was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church and she allied herself with this denomination in early youth, remaining a faithful and consistent member until her death at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 28 days. Gribben, James -- Died, On Friday the 29th. Sept. 1865, Mr. James Gribben, an old and highly respected citizen of Clearcreek Tp., Ashland County, aged 73 years and 9 months. Gribben, Mrs. Peter -- Monday. Mrs. Peter Gribben, aged 52, residing one mile east of Shelby, died very suddenly about 10 o'clock Saturday evening. Mrs. Gribben had been in her usual health during the day but retired very early in the evening. About 10 o'clock she awakened her husband, saving she felt faint. While he was procuring a restorative she died. The physician, who was called, attributed her death to apoplexy. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock this morning. Gribben, Richard A. -- Lafayette. It becomes our sad duty to report the death of Richard A. Gribben, an old and respected citizen of Butler Township, who ended this life of toil, March 13th., 1889, aged 68 years. His remains were interred in the Lafayette Cemetery, Thursday, March 14. Rev. Upp conducting the services. Father Gribben was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and many are the kind deeds which he has done. He was always a staunch Democrat. Grice, Margaret -- Pavonia. Mrs. Margaret Grice died Sept. 3, at the home of her son, Salathiel, near this place. She was almost 87 years old. She was born in Pennsylvania, but has lived in this county over half a century. She raised eleven children, seven of whom are living, six sons, who are scattered over the Union, and one daughter, Mrs. Arnold, who resides in Mansfield. She was a devoted mother, and to the last took a deep interest in her children's welfare. We witnessed her death, which was one of triumph and confiding faith in her Savior, longing to go, saying her work was done. She had been a member of the Dunkard Church over sixty years. Griebling, George -- George Griebling, a farmer residing near Alta, was seriously injured Friday by falling from a ladder while picking apples. His chest and spine were injured. Griebling, George -- George Greibling died Wednesday morning at 2:30 at his home near Alta. Last August Mr. Griebling fell from an apple tree, injuring his spinal cord and was never able to walk after the accident. He was born in this county on Nov. 4, 1864. He is survived by his wife, three sons, William, Louis and Frank, and there[sic] brothers, Fred, John and Henry Griebling. Mr. Griebling was a man who had the esteem of the community in which he lived. He was a member of the First Lutheran church of this city and of the K. of P. lodge of Lexington. Griebling, George -- The funeral of the late Geo. G. Griebling took place Friday morning from the family residence five miles southwest of Mansfield and in spite of the prevailing cold weather was largely attended. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. S. Herold of this city, assisted by Rev. W. S. Carnes and a quartet form the First English church of which Mr. Griebling was a member. Mr. Griebling was one of the best known farmers of Richland county with a reputation for square dealing and sterling character that endeared him to all with whom he was associated. The floral offerings were exceptionally beautiful testifying to the love and esteem in which the deceased was held by his friends. Geo. Griebling was born in this county Nov. 4, 1864, and resided here continuously until his death. He was married in 1895 to Miss Anna Ludwig also of the county and his wife and three children, William, Louis and Frank survive him. He was an active member of the K. of P. lodge of Lexington, occupying all the offices of that order. He held numerous positions of trust in his community, and at the time of the accident that later resulted in his death was township trustee and member of the school board of Troy township. Griefstein, Adam -- Yesterday morning another fatality was added to the endless list of railroad accidents. Adam Griefstein, well known in this city having had charge of one of the local P.F. yard engines for several years, was the victim of the wreck which occurred a short distance from New Galilee, at the eastern state line at 6 o'clock Sunday morning. Griefstein had charge of the engine of east bound freight train No. 76, Westbound freight train No. 65 was running at a good rate of speed on a parallel track when one of its cars jumped the rail. Engineer Griefstein saw the accident and knowing that a wreck was sure to follow, jumped from his engine and was instantly killed. In the wreck which followed a number of freight cars were demolished, but strange to say none of the train men were seriously injured. Griefstein's remains were conveyed to New Galilee and afterward taken through to this home at Crestline on passenger train No. 3, at 8 o'clock last night. The deceased was 35 years of age and leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. Gries, Jacob -- DIED -- At Shenandoah, Ohio, September 8th., 1870, Mr. JACOB GRIES, aged 77 years and 5 days. He was for many years a resident of Richland County, Ohio. In an early day, he emigrated from Pennsylvania, his native State. During his last illness, his sufferings were intense. He professed peace with his God, and in the Christian faith, departed to the eternal world. He was a member of the Reformed Church. His widow, bowed down with age, yet survives him. Griffin, William -- Bellville. Last Monday night as the 9:33 train came in, a sad accident happened at the depot. The train ran past the usual place of stopping and had to back up to the depot. Wm. Griffin, formerly of this place but now of East Palestine, stepped off before the train stopped and was thrown under the wheels. Grim, Anna M. -- Bellville. Mrs. Anna M. Grim died of cancer, Monday, aged 43 years, 11 months and 2 days, and was buried Tuesday, Rev. W.W. Anderson conducting the funeral services. Grimes, Mrs. Charles -- Mrs. Charles Grimes, formerly of this city, died Sunday at her home in Ann Arbor, Mich. She is survived by four sons and will be remembered by many of the older residents of the city. [Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield: 17 March 1909]

Grimes, Mary Wellington -- Mary Wellington Grimes was born in West Cambridge, Mass., June 8, 1819. She came to Mansfield in 1841 and, during the two succeeding years, devoted a portion of her time, as instructor, to school interests. On September 21, 1843, she was united in marriage to Andrew L. Grimes, whom she survived thirteen years. During May of the following year (1844) she became a member of the First Congregational Church, with which her husband was already officially connected. At 11 o'clock Friday evening, Jan. 19, after a period of suffering, she passed quietly, peacefully to the Home beyond. Of the three sons and three daughters born to this home, four remain -- two sons, Charles and Frederick, and two daughters, Mary and Helen. Four grand-sons and two grand-daughters bear the family name. The many who have had opportunity to know Mrs. Grimes in all the bearings of her life can well understand how meaningless and unnecessary are words to make the character of such a woman known and appreciated in this community. In domestic relations there was forcibly exemplified and solidarity of wedded life; two standing truly as one, in all matters pertaining to the best interests of home society and the church. In obligations where her own peculiar individuality must become the exponent of spiritual and moral power, she stood unflinchingly for all that was good and true and noble. The maturity and righteousness of her judgment made her always a safe counselor, and eminently fitted her for the position she so long filled in the church whose privileges were to her the expression of Christian life. During the last days, when bodily suffering seemed all that could be borne the unfailing testimony of this consecrated mother was "Jesus is just what I need, and all I need". We may well pause silently, thoughtfully, when such an influencer is no longer a part of us. -- F.W.L. Groff, Elias -- On Friday morning, May 19th., 1876, at his residence in Green township, Ashland County, Mr. Elias Groff, aged sixty years and fifteen days. Mr. Groff was born in Frederick township, Montgomery township, Penn., May 4th., 1816. His parentage was the good old "Pennsylvania Dutch" stock, the homely virtues and sterling characteristics of which he retained through life. His father removed from Pennsylvania in the spring of 1828, when he was twelve years old, and settled on the banks of the Clearfork, three-fourths of a mile south of Perrysville, in what was then Richland, but now Ashland county; here in full sight of his last resting place, he spent his youth, the prime of his more than usually strong manhood, and at its close passed into the Land of Shade and Rest. Intimately associated with the early history of the county, having personal experience of many of the privations, hardships and trials incident to the period -- his enthusiastic, positive and earnest character identifying him closely with all the social, political and religious interests of his community. Mr. Groff's life was one of more than ordinary interest. He was endowed, to a marked degree, with those traits of character which win the confidence and esteem of men; he was one of the finest types of the rugged, dauntless, honest men of his day, and as such, the bold outlines of his character, his positive and fearless self assertion, his firm political convictions, his thorough and hearty and withering scorn of all dishonesty and superficiality and sham, made him as a man conspicuous, and a power that was felt throughout his community for more than a quarter of a century. In May of 1842, he joined the communion of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In February of 1843, he married Miss Eleanor Darling, a devoted and pious woman, who survives him. In business he was a prosperous man, accumulating means which he bestowed with a liberal hand when charity, public benevolence or the dictates of his Christian profession dictated. In his political convictions, which were democratic; he was positive, direct and out-spoken; in his church connections enthusiastic, self-sacrificing and consistent; was superintendent for many years of his church Sabbath school, and served perhaps as often as any man in his part of the State, in Sabbath school conventions, church councils and Synods. That he was the friend of educational enterprise, the resolutions appended to this article, passed by the students of Greentown Academy, an institution of which he has been a constant friend and liberal patron since it was founded. But he has passed away. Once though he well knew how to enjoy life, and fully appreciated the blessing, yet the grim messenger found him prepared and willing to depart. Thus has passed away a man of independent thought, of keen judgment, of positive convictions and prompt and decided action; a man, who as he understood them, discharged his duty with hearty zeal and unselfish devotion to society, his family, his church, his God. Grogg, Sarah Lentz -- Funeral services for the late Mrs. Sarah Lentz Grogg, aged 87 years, who died last Friday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.H. Ritchie, Markey Street, following a short illness of la grippe, were held from the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Monday afternoon at 1:30. Rev. J.R. Frye, pastor of the Evangelical churches was assisted by Rev. Chas. W. Cassel. Temporary interment was made in the Bellville Cemetery. Mrs. Grogg was born in Perry Township, Morrow County, and is survived by one son, C.C. Grogg, Mansfield; three daughters, Mrs. Ella Baughman, Cedar Rapids, Ia.; Mrs. C.D. Strom, Mansfield, and Mrs. Ritchie; three brothers, Jacob Lentz, Santiago, Cal., Henry Lentz, Dillon, Ia., and Adam Lentz, Avoca, Ia., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Tropf, of Cincinnati. Grogg, Verda -- Verda Grogg, the wife of C. C. Grogg, died at her home, rear of 30 Bradford avenue, at 12 o'clock yesterday after an illness of several months. She was 55 years, six months and 14 days old. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Alice, her mother, Mrs. Emmanuel Shaffer, and a brother, Edgar Shaffer. She was a member and faithful attendant of the First Lutheran church. Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon at the hone, Rev, Henry C. Gross, Ed -- During the rain storm last Friday afternoon, Ed Gross, only son of Adam Gross, residing about three miles north of this place was instantly killed by lightning. The unfortunate young man was lying on the porch at the time the deadly bolt descended. It struck the chimney, and ran along one side of the house leaving the building from a widow sill near which he was lying and ran the full length of the body resulting as above stated. Gross, Warren A. -- Warren A. Gross, 39, of 119 Boughton Ave. died early Sunday morning at Mansfield General Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Gross was born Jan. 11, 1915 in Mansfield, the son of the late Lee and Jean Kidder Gross, and spent his entire life here. At the time of his death he was employed at the Corner Lunch, West Sixth and Mulberry Sts. During World War II he served overseas with the U.S. Army and was a member of Amvets, Robert P. Spreng Post No. 26, and Mansfield Order of Owls, No. 1152. Surviving are his wife, Jane Brubach Gross, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Lane of Mansfield. Rev. John C. Melchert, pastor of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church will conduct services from the Wappner Funeral Home Tuesday morning at 10:00 o'clock. Burial will be in the Mansfield Cemetery. Grove, J.H. -- At nine o'clock, Monday, 'Squire J.H. Groves, residing a half mile north of town, met with an accident which resulted in death at two o'clock in the afternoon of the same day. Early in the morning he went to a field to cut oats, and finding the crop too green to harvest, returned to the house, when the Walterses, threshers, went by on their way to do a job of threshing for Jacob Hamilton. Mr. Groves announced his intention of going to the threshing field, and walked along side the traction engine until opposite the residence of David Phelps, where he made an attempt to get on the engine between it and the water tank attached thereto. He got one foot on the standing board of the engine, when the right one was caught by a front wheel of the tank wagon and he was drawn under. The wheel traversed the whole length of his body, passing up his right leg, diagonally across his abdomen, and off at his left shoulder. The tank was loaded and its weight crushed his body in a terrible manner. Neighbors conveyed him to his home where he lived conscious of his fate until the hour before stated. Grove, Simon -- Simon Grove, of 58 East Third Street, a well-known cabinetmaker, died at his home this morning after an illness of several months. Funeral Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Simon Grove was born in Berks County, Pa., Aug. 31, 1861, and his boyhood home was on the Schuylkill river. In April, 1853, he came to Ohio and located in Mansfield. In 1854 he returned to Berks County and married Miss Sarah McMullen, who, with their two sons, Frank B. and Milton S., survives him. Simon Grove was known to almost every man, woman and child in Mansfield and in his days of health and strength had an exhaustless stock of good nature and humor. He was a good citizen, an honest man and a sincere friend and while not unexpected the announcement of his death will cause sorrow to all who knew him. Grubaugh, Dora E. -- The funeral of Mrs. Dora E. Grubaugh, wife of Walter Grubaugh, occurred at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Dr. Wiles officiated. A large number of relatives and friends of the deceased attended the funeral. Friends were also present from Van Wert, Delaware, Galion and other places. The deceased had a large circle of friends. She was born at Lexington, Dec. 2, 1867, and was united in marriage with Walter Grubaugh about eight years ago. Mrs. Grubaugh was a charter member of White Cross Temple, No. 101, Rathbone Sisters, and a large number of members of the society were present and took part in the funeral service and also accompanied the body to the grave. Grubaugh, Dora E. -- Mrs. Dora Grubaugh, wife of Walter Grubaugh, died at their home in the Carpenter-Ozier block at 8 a.m. Thursday. The deceased had been ill with typhoid fever for several weeks and her death was not unexpected. Mrs. Grubaugh was 30 years and 10 days of age. Funeral arrangements have not yet been decided upon. Grubaugh, J.W. -- A telegram was received here by J.W. Grubaugh announcing the death Friday evening at Warsaw, Ind., of Dr. Joseph Chandler, a former resident of this city. Dr. Chandler was about 70 years of age and was a brother of Mrs. J.W. Grubaugh, of West Fourth Street. He leaves two sons, Judson and John Chandler, of Warsaw. He was born at Mohicanville, Ashland County, and when a young man before he took up the study of medicine, he was a carpenter in this city, working for John Bell. Mrs. Grubaugh is visiting at Mohicanville and the news of her brother's death was telephoned to her today. Grubaugh, James W. -- James W. Grubaugh died Tuesday morning about 5 o'clock at his home, 392 West Fourth Street, from a complication of diseases from which he had suffered all winter. He was 70 years of age. Mr. Grubaugh leaves a wife and four children, James and William and Mrs. B. Gates and Miss Rebecca, all of this city. The deceased leaves one sister, Mrs. Elvin Brinley, of this city, and two brothers, Robert F. Grubaugh of Galion, and Wilson S. Grubaugh of Delaware. Mr. Grubaugh joined the Volunteer Fire Company in 1856. Mr. Grubaugh was a member of the I.O.O.F. and this lodge will have charge of the funeral services which will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. [Mansfield Weekly News: 16 March 1905, p. 3]

Grubaugh, Richard Hooker -- Richard Hooker Grubaugh died at his home, No. 107 North Diamond Street, shortly after 12 o'clock Sunday afternoon, aged nearly 83 years. The deceased was the oldest citizen of Mansfield born within the boundaries of Richland County. He was born on a farm about one mile east of Hayesville, Sept. 3, 1815. During those days there were yet a number of the original inhabitants, the Indians, in these parts. When the subject of this sketch was a child his family moved to a point 1½ miles east of Ashland in Richland County on a farm where they resided until Richard was 15 years of age. Then the father sold the place and took up land 2½ miles south of Perrysville. At the age of 25 years, Mr. Grubaugh drove a stage coach and was in charge of the United States mails between Hayesville and this city for four years. Afterward for four years more he carried the mails and drove a stage between Hayesville and Wooster. While in the service of "Uncle Sam" Mr. Grubaugh had a number of thrilling adventures. Mr. Grubaugh met Johnny Appleseed many times in his youth. He also drove "Tippecanoe" Harrison through Richland County in 1840. Jan. 14, 1843, Mr. Grubaugh was united in marriage with Elizabeth Fidler, of Berks County, Pa. Five children were born, including three sons and two daughters. Joseph L., resides at Indianapolis, Ind., and Walter d., and Ella C. Grubaugh live in Mansfield. The two oldest children, John H. and Susanna, are dead. The mother died about 17 years ago. Mr. Grubaugh was the oldest fireman in Mansfield at the time of his death. He served as a member of engine company No. 1 and also acted as treasurer of the organization until its dissolution. He has been a member of Mansfield lodge No. 19, I.O.O.F. for more than 40 years. Although very aged Mr. Grubaugh's mind was quite clear and his memory was remarkably good. He is of a long lived race. An aunt died at the age of 102 years and an uncle attained the age of 99 years, while his father lived to see is 98th. milestone. Seven brothers and sisters survive Richard Hooker Grubaugh, only one of whom is under 60 years of age. Mrs. Margaret Lantz, of Pulaski, is 81 years of age. Mrs. Rachel Miller, of Perrysville, is 77 years of age. Jonathan Grubaugh, of Van Wert, is 69 years old. Mrs. Elzina Brinley, of this city, is 67 years of age. James W. Grubaugh, of this city, has attained 63 years. Wilson Grubaugh, of Delaware, is 61 years of age. Robert F. Grubaugh, of Galion, is 59 years old. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary McClellan and Mrs. Henrietta Wright, died at the ages of 75 and 57 years respectively. Funeral Tuesday, July 13, at 3:30 p.m. Mansfield Lodge No. 19, of which the deceased was a member, will attend the funeral in a body, meting at the lodge room at 3 p.m. The old volunteer fireman of the city will also meet tonight at the fire department station to make arrangmem4nts to attend the funeral. Grubaugh, Richard Hooker -- Last of the Stage Drivers. Richard Hooker Grubaugh, who, up to the time of his death was the oldest resident of Mansfield, born in Richland county, died very suddenly Sunday noon at his home on North Diamond St. He was nearly 83 years of age. Shortly after noon Sunday, he walked from one room to another and sat down in a rocking chair. In a moment he was dead. The deceased was one of the pioneers of Richland county. He was born a few miles east of Hayesville Sept. 3,1814. When he was a child his parents moved to farm near Ashland, where they resided for a number of years, afterward moving to a farm, south of Perrysville He helped raise many log cabins and barns, they being the only kind of building in use in those days. At age 25 he drove the stage coach of four horses, and had charge of the U.S. mails between Hayesville and Mansfield. He drove this route four years and then carried the mails between Mansfield and Wooster. He used to go heavily armed, as stage coach "holdups" were not infrequent occurrences. When a young man Mr. Grubaugh met the historical Johnny Appleseed quite frequently. As a driver of the stage Coach he drove William Henry Harrison through Richland county when "Tippecanoe" was making his campaign for president in 1840. After quitting the stagecoach he came to this city. January 14,1843, h e was married to Elizabeth Fidler, of Berks county, Pa., who died some 17 years ago. Since the death of Robert Cairns, he was up to the time of his death, the oldest citizen of Mansfield and Richland county, who was born in the county. Grubb, Amanda -- Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gatton for Mrs. Amanda Grubb who had made her home with them for the past six months. Mrs. Grubb died Monday afternoon aged 91 years. Services were conducted at ten o'clock Tuesday morning by Rev. C. D. Secrist and burial was made in the Bellville cemetery. Grubb, Daniel B. -- Death made heavy inroads on southern Richland county the past week in calling from earth two of its best-known and most-respected men -- Isaac Hess of Butler and Daniel B. Grubb, of North Liberty -- both of whom were laid to rest in the Ankenytown cemetery after a double funeral at the Church of the Brethren there, an account of which will appear elsewhere on this page. Isaac Hess was born in Ankenytown, July 2, 1845, and died at his home in Butler on Sunday, Jan. 2, 1921, aged 75 years and six months after an illness of three weeks and a complication of diseases. Mr. Hess was united in marriage to Miss Sarah E. Grubb of Knox county, Dec. 30, 1869. Having no children of their own, they adopted Blanche Keefer, May 15, 1884, who was then just three years of age. Mr. Hess was the son of Henry Hess, a native of Westmoreland county, Pa., and one of a family of six children. One brother, J. Fred Hess, of Marion, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. Jackson Bechtel and Mrs. Wm. Brubaker, of Ankenytown, survive him. One sister, Mrs. Maude Cocauour, and one brother, Eli L. Hess, preceded him in death. The daughter, Miss Blanche Hess, was united in marriage to Rev. C.B. Tuttle in 1906. Isaac Hess was reared on a farm and continued in that work until 1880, when he came to Butler and worked at the carpenter trade two years. He then went into the furniture and undertaking business for the next 20 years. At one time he was president and treasurer of the Richland County Bank of Butler; also treasurer of the Butler Steel Furniture company. He served as the treasurer eight years and of Butler a similar period. He was treasurer of the school board 12 years, a member of the school board nine years, and of the village council three years. He was superintendent of the Butler M.P. Sunday School a number of years. Mr. & Mrs. Hess were members of the Brethren church. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 8:00 at the M.P. Church, Rev. Mr. Obee officiating. Six nephews acted as pallbearers. The remains were then taken to Ankenytown. The widow, adopted daughter Mrs. Blanche Tuttle, husband and two children are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband, father and friend. The Leader's Dividing Ridge correspondent gives the following account of Mr. Grubb's demise: "Daniel B. Grubb, a life-long resident of this community, died Saturday morning from the effects of a stroke of paralysis sustained Tuesday morning. He was aged 82 years and 19 days, having been born and reared in the vicinity of his death." "Mr. Grubb had the respect and held the confidence of all who knew him. His life was full of good deeds and works. He was united in marriage to Catherine Bechtel of Bedford county, Pa. To this union, one son and one daughter were born. Mr. Grubb is survived by the widow, son Elmer and daughter Mrs. Mabel Strausbaugh and three grandchildren; also two brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Brethren at Ankenytown Tuesday morning." [Richland County Leader: 07 January 1921, Vol. 2, No. 5]

Grubb, Daniel B. -- DOUBLE FUNERAL HELD FOR AGED RELATIVES -- A double funeral of D.B. Grubb and Isaac Hess was held at the Church of the Brethren at 11:00 on Tuesday morning at Ankenytown. D.B. Grubb died at his home on Jan. 1 at 8:30, and Isaac Hess died at his home in Butler on Jan. 2, at 9:00. The services were conducted by the Rev. A.I. Heestand of Smithville and the Rev. Mr. Obee of Butler, and burials were in the Ankenytown cemetery. This is the fourth double funeral to be held at this place. The pall bearers of Mr. Hess were all six of his nephews. Grubb, David Z. -- David Z. Grubb, a well known resident of Butler who was the man who started the development of the territory around Butler as a gas field, died Thursday morning at his home after an illness of about three years with paralysis. The deceased formerly lived at Mt. Vernon and for years was a clerk in Ringwalt's store. He was also in the monument business in Mt. Vernon and in Butler. Mr. Grubb was the man who promoted the first companies to drill around Butler for natural gas and oil. The deceased leaves a wife and two children. Grubb, Ena -- Mrs. Ena Grubb, 72, died early Friday morning at her home here following a heart attack. Surviving are two nephews, Edward Price of Chicago and F.E. Wise. The funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the George Funeral home, conducted by Rev. R.J. Stratton. Burial was made in the Four Corners cemetery. Grubb, Samuel -- Died, at his home in Independence, Richland County, Ohio, Samuel Grubb, aged 65 years, 3 months and 23 days. Samuel Grubb was born in Bedford County, Penna., Nov. 28th., 1824. At the age of seven years he, with his parents, removed to Pike Township, Knox County, Ohio, where he spent the major portion of his life. On the first of April 1889, he removed to the village of Independence, where he lived at the time of his death. Mr. Grubb was married first in 1845 to Miss Mary Zook, of Knox County, who shared with him the toils, cares and blessedness of wedded life for 35 years. Of this union 7 children were born to them, five of whom are living, two having died in infancy, and on May 21st., 1881, the wife and mother was called to the spirit world. In November, 1886, Mr. Grubb was again united in marriage with Mrs. Nancy A. Tinkey, of Independence, Ohio, who survives him. Mr. Grubb was a model man and highly respected. He lived a consistent Christian life for more than 25 years, having united in early life with the German Baptist Brethren Church, and later with the Progressive Brethren church at its organization where he held his membership until his death. His exemplary life commends itself to all. His faith triumphant. His blessed Master has called him home. The funeral services, led by Rev. J. Grumbling, Henry -- At a new house on Hedges street owned by P.J. Faust, Henry Grumbling, aged about 28, hod carrier for Pifer & Wilson, plasterers, was sent after mortar about half past one o'clock Thursday afternoon. Not returning about ten minutes after Pifer went after the mortar himself and found Grumbling with his head in the Mortar box and his feet protruding over the side. Pifer pulled Grumbling out, but found that he was dead. Dr. Francis was called, however, but he, of course, could do nothing for him. The remains were taken by Faust & Wappner to the residence of his father, George Grumbling Sr., on Poplar street. Deceased is single. A post-mortem examination was held Friday on the body of Henry Grumbling by the coroner, Dr. Eli Stofer, of Bellville, and Dr. R.H. Reed. They found that the deceased came to his death by bursting of a blood vessel at the base of the brain, almost a pint of blood being found in the cavity. Grumbling, Leah -- DIED, At her late residence on Poplar Street, at 6:30 pm., Nov. 1, Mrs. Leah Grumbling, aged 52 years. Funeral from the residence at 2 p.m., Nov. 3, Dr. H.L. Wiles officiating. The deceased was a very large woman, weighing over 300 pounds at the time of her death. Guadaynino, Sella—Plymouth. Sella Guadaynino, 92, of Woodlawn Nursing Home in Mansfield, died Tuesday at the nursing home after a long illness. She was born May 4, 1890, in Alsace-Lorraine, France and lived most of her life in Plymouth. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Frank (Rose) Altomonte, Mrs. Don (Maty) Akers and Mrs. Ralph (Louise) Stanton. All of Mansfield, Mrs. Frank (Chris) Frisch of Ellenton, Fla., and Mrs. Jo-Anne Stransky of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, Carl Danine of Zolfo Springs, Fla., Robert Costello of Miami, Fla., and Phil Guadaynino of New York City; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Gue, Sarah Ellen -- Mrs. Sarah Ellen Gue, who has been sick at the home of her son, Edward From, on Brazilian Avenue for the past eleven weeks with pulmonary trouble, died at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 3, 1914, aged 54 years and 8 months. For several years past she has been making her home mostly in California, returning here about three months ago, shortly after which she was taken ill and gradually grew worse until death ensued. Funeral was held from the home of her son, Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G.H. Crafts, interment being made in Greenlawn Cemetery. Guiter, Mrs. William -- Independence. Last Sunday afternoon Mrs. Wm. Guiter left home, it is supposed, for the purpose of going to George Stahl's, carrying with her some rye and going across the fields. Nothing was thought of her going nor was she asked where she was going by the family; but as she did not return in the evening they wondered where she had went as it would be strange for her to remain away over night. Finally they concluded she had gone over to see Mrs. Sowers who, at the time, was lying at the point of death; consequently no particular search for her was made that night. The next day, after sufficient time had elapsed for her to come home and she did not come, they became alarmed and Mr. Guiter went over to Sowers' to see about her. After he had gone some little time John, a son, found her track in the snow and traced it in the direction of Stahl's, to what is known as an upper field, about 100 years from the house. There he found his poor mother stone dead and frozen perfectly stiff. The supposition is that she died of heart disease, of which she was troubled. Her sudden and sad death casts a gloom over the entire neighborhood. The remains were interred in the Independence Cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral being preached in the Evangelical church by Rev. Gump, Benjamin -- Died, on Friday evening, October 20th., Benjamin Gump, aged 83 years, 7 months and 1 day. Father Gump was born in Frederick County, Md. He was baptized in infancy by Rev. Mr. Beck of the Moravian Church, and, in process of time was elected to church membership by the same denomination. In 1813 he enlisted for the war against Great Britain and served in the 37th. regiment under Capt. Ogles and Col. Heath. In 1818 he went to Bedford County, Pa., and was married the same year to Ester Smith. In 1826 he moved to Jackson Tp., Richland Co., Ohio, where he resided until his death. He was buried on Sabbath afternoon in the London cemetery by Rev. D. Summers, from the words found in Job XVI:22. Rev. N.H. Loose offered prayer and read the liturgical service at the grave. The large number of persons attending the funeral is evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by the community in which he lived for half a century. Mr. Gump was a plain, unostentatious Christian. His life was characterized by uniform efforts, to make his "calling and election sure". There was nothing spasmodic or periodical in his religion. He had laid hold on Christ; on the saving virtue of his all sufficient atonement, by the strong arm of faith, and the life he lived he lived by faith in the Son of God. The Bible was his celestial star to guide him in the ways of truth and holiness. He practiced its saving precepts, and rejoiced in view of its precious promises. Gurik, Paul N. -- Mansfield - Paul N. Gurik, 70, of 567 Sunset Blvd. died Monday afternoon in Riverside Hospital, Columbus, after a brief illness. He was born June 7, 1919 in Mansfield and lived here all his life. Mr. Gurik was retired superintendent of Richland County Wastewater Systems. He was a member of Holy Trinty Lutheran Church. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II as instructor of mechanics in Armored Force School at Fort Knox, Ky., and also in Company A, 738th Amphibious Tractor Battalion overseas. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Burns Gurik; one daughter, Pamela K. Thames of Forest, Ohio; four grandchildren, Joshua, Abby, Jo, Emily and Ashley, all of Forest; one brother, George of Moline, Ill.; and five sisters, Anna Young and Mary Morris of Mansfield, Catherine Kellenbarger of Newark, Ohio, Irene Sweet of San Diego, Calif., and Evelyn Ream of Westerville. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Andy and John. Calling hours at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Gurney, John F. -- John F. Gurney was born in Belfast, Me., Nov. 10, 1832, and died Dec. 13, 1906, aged 74 years, 1 month, and 3 days. He moved with his parents to Bellville, Ohio, in 1838. He was married to Lovina Tinkey in 1856. Seven children were born to them, one having died in infancy. The other six were all present at the funeral. He also leaves 26 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. In 1874 he moved to Richmond Ceneter, Huron County, and bought a farm containing 280 acres. His wife died in 1893 and in 1903 he married his second wife, Mr. Martha M. Kelsie, who survives him. He was a soldier in the Civil War, a member of 163rd. regiment O.V.I. A few years ago he deeded to each of his children living, 40 acres from his 280 acres, leaving him the 40 acres where he lived up to the time of his death. In the earlier part of his religious life he was associated with the Presbyterian church at Bellville and later with the U.B. church near Richmond Center, Huron County, until recent years. His death was caused by a complication of diseases resulting from catarrhal affliction. He was a great sufferer but endured his affliction with patience and resignation and departed this life in the faith and hope of a Christian. Funeral services were held in the U.B. church in Chicago, Ohio, conducted by Rev. Welsh, of Attica, assisted by Rev. Gusman, Louise -- MRS. GUSMAN of WOLF LAKE DIES AT AGE 88 -- Mrs. Louise Gusman of 85 Michigan Ave., Wolf Lake; died Saturday evening at the Muskegon County Medical Center Facility after a lingering illness. She was 88. She was born July 19, 1879 at Erford, Germany and came to this country with her parents at the age of 4. She settled in Mansfield, Ohio and moved to Muskegon more than 50 years age. The former Louise C Schuster was married to Charles W Gusman on March 24, 1900 at Tiffin, Ohio; he died here on December 5, 1966. She attended Calvary Baptist Church and the Women's Bible Class. Survivors include one daughter Mrs. Charles Dothnier of New Vienna, Ohio; several grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Ida Garber of Mansfield, Ohio. Submitted by Joanna. Gutchall, Henry V. -- Cass Township. Henry V. Gutchall, 63, a native of Cass Township, Richland County, died suddenly at 1 PM Thursday of a heart attack suffered at the Shelby Air Force Depot where he had been employed for 16 years. Gutekunst, Martin -- Martin Gutekunst, a laboring man who has been a resident of Mansfield for a long time, was found dead in bed this morning about 5:30 o'clock in room No. 35 at the Palace hotel in the Baltimore block at the corner of North Mulberry and West Sixth streets. Mr. Gutekunst has been on a prolonged spree and his death was due to the effects of his debauch. Last week he was arrested and placed in the city prison on complaint of members of the family, who claimed that he had come to the house and created a disturbance. *Order the full obituary for more detailed info. about this death and the inquest. Her disease was cancer of the breast; she had been a great sufferer for over a year yet bore all without a murmur. MRS. GUTHRIE was a daughter of REFINE and MRS. HARVEY and was born in Lexington, Ohio, February 7, l850 and came with her parents when four years old to Decatur County, where she ever since resided with the exception of two years spent in Kansas. She was married to DANIEL GUTHRIE Feb. 28, l878. She leaves a husband, three daughters, one son, a father and mother and two sisters, besides a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. When quite young, she joined the U.B. Church and ever after was a faithful follower of our blessed Master and gave every assurance that she was ready to go at the Master's call and told her family not to grieve after her as all was well. Guthrie, Glenn W. - Mansfield - Glenn W, Guthrie, 95, of Coshocton Health Care Center and formerly of Elm Street in Warsaw, Ohio, died Saturday at the care center after and extended illness. He was born March 23, 1896, in Ontario, the son of Marion Craig and Margaret Boals Guthrie, both now deceased. He was orphaned as a child and raised by Dr. Gregg of Savannah. He was married June 17, 1920 to Agnes Funk and she died June 29, 1984. He was a retired teacher and school administrator for many years, retiring in 1964 from Johnny Appleseed School in Mansfield. Mr Guthrie was a member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association and was a graduate of Savannah Academy and Kent State University. He received his master's degree from Western Reserve University. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in France during World War I, and was a member and elder of the Linden Road Presbyterian Church in Mansfield. He was a member of Mansfield American Legion Post 16, Mansfield Lodge 35, F&AM for 60 years, the Mansfield Chapter of Royal Arch Masons for 60 years, the Grand Council R&SM and Commandery 21, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, and Ruth Chapter 17, Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are four nieces, Dorothy Root of Mansfield, Mary Alice Sprow of Spokane, Wash., June Jones and Ruth McKee, both of Warsaw; and three nephews, Robert Mauk of DeLand Fla., John Funk of Columbia, Mo., and Ivers L. Funk of Zephyrhills, Fla. Calling will be held one hour prior to services which will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Fischer Funeral Home, 412, E. Main St., Warsaw, by the Rev. John Russell. Guthrie, John -- John Guthrie, aged 69 years, 5 months and 21 days, father of Sheriff James Guthrie, died at the room of this son at 1:30 this morning. Mr. Guthrie was one of the pioneers of the county, having been born in Springfield Township. In the year 1851 the deceased married Miss Rachel Smith, also of Springfield Township. Two children were the result of the marriage, James Guthrie, the present sheriff of the county, and Wm. Guthrie, now of this city. In 1884 Mrs. Guthrie died and was interred in the Ontario Cemetery. Mr. Guthrie removed to this city about three years ago and took up his residence with is son James. About the 11th. of May the old gentleman's health began to fail and he has been confined to the house ever since. The deceased has been a member of the Presbyterian church at Ontario for a number of years and was a consistent Christian. The funeral cortege will leave this city at one o'clock tomorrow afternoon for Ontario. Services will be held at the Presbyterian church in that place at 2:30 p.m., Rev. D.J. Guthrie, Nathaniel -- Mr. Nathaniel Guthrie passed away at his home two miles east of town Tuesday night after many months of suffering with cancer. Funeral Services were held from the family home at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon conducted by Rome I.O.O.F. lodge. Nathaniel Guthrie, son of John E. and Elizabeth Guthrie, was born in Bloominggrove Township, Richland county, October 6,1843. His boyhood days were quietly passed on the home farm. In his nineteenth year however, his mode of life became greatly changed for n the 15 of October 1862 he volunteered for service in the civil war and was assigned to duty in Company K of the 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He remained in the service for one year and then on the account of disability he was honorably discharged. Mr. Guthrie joined the Rome lodge, No. 158, I.O.O.F. in 1872 in which he has been a faithful member and has passed all the chairs during his forty eight years of service. On August 14, 1866, Mr. Guthrie was united in marriage with Miss and Nancy Porcher formerly of Butler township to which union were born ten children of whom six are yet living. Nathaniel Guthrie was born Oct. 6, 1843 and died March 9, 1920, aged 76 years 5 months and 8 days. He is survived by a wife Mrs. Almeda Guthrie, and six children, Luther J. Guthrie of Shiloh, D. Harvey J. Guthrie, of Toledo, O. , Taylor M. Guthrie of Shiloh, Benton W. Guthrie of Shelby, Miss Eva Guthrie of Shiloh and Mrs. Marion Huston of Shelby, Ohio. Guthrie, Nathaniel S. -- SHELBY -- N.S. Guthrie, mention of whose death was made last week, was in his eightieth year. Mr. Guthrie sustained an injury by a fall a few years ago, which resulted in a carbuncle and erysipelas. He also was a sufferer from heart disease which was the immediate cause of his death. Gutzweiler, Victor -- Victor Gutzweiler formerly of this city but for over 15 years past a resident of Cleveland, died in that city Jan. 22 of Bright's disease, aged 51 years.
